Why We Love Dog Portrait Sessions at Stables Photography Studios

There’s something truly heartwarming about photographing dogs. Their expressive eyes, their quirky personalities, the way they tilt their heads when they’re curious – it’s all a joy to capture. Here at Stables Photography Studios in Monmouthshire, we’ve been photographing families for over 15 years, and yes – that very much includes the four-legged kind.

Dog portrait sessions have become one of the highlights of our studio calendar. Whether it’s a scruffy rescue with a story to tell, a proud pedigree fresh from the groomers, or a bounding puppy with energy to spare, every dog brings something new to the studio. And let’s be honest – dogs really do make us better humans.

11 Years, Hundreds of Dogs, and Still Counting

Gareth, our lead photographer, has captured portraits of hundreds of dogs over the last 11 years at Stables Photography Studios, and for several years before that too! Every single session is different. Some dogs walk in confidently like they own the place. Others need a bit of coaxing, a handful of treats, and a reassuring cuddle from their human. But they all end up stealing the show.

The variety is incredible. You’d think we might have seen it all by now – but no. Even after all these years, we still find ourselves meeting breeds we’ve never photographed before. That’s the magic of dog photography. There’s always a surprise waiting just behind the studio door.

And let’s not forget the joy of getting to know each dog’s personality. Some are goofy and playful. Others are regal and poised. Some just want to sit in your lap, whether they weigh five kilos or fifty. It’s this rich tapestry of character that makes dog portrait photography so rewarding – and why we never, ever get tired of it.

A Tail-Wagging Collaboration: Stables x The Dogfather Abergavenny

Last year, we ran our very popular dog photography promotion in partnership with the wonderful Rich Millar from The Dogfather Abergavenny. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet some truly beautiful dogs and their equally lovely humans.

The promotion gave dog lovers the chance to experience a professional portrait session with Gareth – and the results were just gorgeous. There’s something special about seeing a pet parent’s face light up when they see their dog’s portrait on the big screen for the first time. Pride, love, a touch of disbelief – “Is that really our Bonnie?!” Yes, it absolutely is.

Working with The Dogfather meant we were able to reach even more local dog lovers, many of whom hadn’t considered a dog portrait session before. For us, that’s a real privilege – being able to open people’s eyes to just how stunning and meaningful these portraits can be.

Launching Soon: Our 2025 Dog Portrait Promotion

And now for the exciting news…

We’re thrilled to announce that our 2025 dog photography promotion will be launching this July – and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. One lucky winner will receive our top prize: a full portrait session and wall art worth £699.

Yes, really.

We’re not just talking about a few quick snaps. This is a tailored, relaxed, and joyful studio session where your dog is the star. You’ll come away with timeless, professionally edited images that celebrate your dog’s unique charm. And if you win, you’ll also receive a piece of stunning wall art – a lasting reminder of your bond.

Entry is simple (keep an eye on our social media and website for details), and we’ll also have lots of runner-up prizes and special offers for those who take part. It’s our way of celebrating the dogs of Monmouthshire – and saying thank you to the people who love them.

What to Expect from a Dog Portrait Session

We know that bringing your dog into a photography studio might feel like a big ask – but we promise, it’s a relaxed and friendly experience. The studio is warm and welcoming, with plenty of space for sniffing and settling in.

Gareth works at your dog’s pace. If they need time to get comfortable, that’s absolutely fine. If they’d rather chase a ball than sit still, we’ll work with that too. The goal is to capture your dog as they are – whether that’s calm and soulful or full of beans.

We always recommend bringing along a few favourite treats or toys, and if your dog has a special blanket or collar that means something to you, bring that too. These little details can add real meaning to your portraits.

Why Dog Portraits Matter

Our dogs are only with us for a short part of our lives, but for them, we are everything. Having a beautiful portrait of your dog is about more than decoration. It’s a celebration of the love, the loyalty, the daily joy they bring.

Over the years, we’ve had many clients return to us after their dog has passed, saying how much they treasure the images we created. It’s a powerful reminder that photography isn’t just about what you see – it’s about what you feel when you see it.
