Why 12 Weeks is the Perfect Time to Photograph Your Baby

At our Monmouthshire portrait photography studio, we absolutely love photographing babies. There’s something so special about those first few months – a time when everything is new, tender, and fleeting. While newborn sessions are popular in the first two weeks, we often recommend photographing your baby around 12 weeks old. At this age, they’re more alert, a little stronger, and often ready with their very first smile – and the results are just beautiful. Before they closed we had a wonderful partnership with Little Treasures baby boutique in Abergavenny. Many of their customers came to us for a photoshoot, we have photographed hundreds of gorgeous 12 week old babies!

A little more awareness, a lot more magic

By 12 weeks, your baby will likely be more settled into the world. They’ve had time to adjust, and you probably have too. This means less stress and more enjoyment for everyone involved. Babies at this age can hold eye contact, track movement, and respond to your voice – all of which helps us capture images that feel alive and full of connection.

One of the loveliest things about photographing babies at this stage is that they can look straight into the lens. Those wide, curious eyes and sweet expressions make for stunning portraits. Your baby’s growing personality starts to peek through, and it’s a joy to capture.

The benefit of a gentle routine

Another reason we recommend this stage? Families often find themselves settling into a bit of a routine by the time their baby is 12 weeks old. You’ll have a better idea of nap times, feeds, and those crucial happy windows – which makes planning a session far more relaxed.

A calm baby means a more enjoyable experience, and that always shows in the photographs. No rush, no stress – just time set aside to focus on your little one and preserve these early memories.

Choosing the right time of day

The time of day can make all the difference to how your baby feels in the studio. We typically suggest mid-morning appointments, when most babies are at their happiest. They’ve usually had a feed and a nap, which means we get a calm, content baby who’s more likely to engage and respond.

We’re happy to work around your baby’s individual rhythm too – the goal is always to make it as easy and natural as possible. We also allow plenty of time for changes, cuddles, and breaks. We’re never in a hurry.

What happens during the session?

Our baby portrait sessions are designed to be gentle and enjoyable. The studio is warm and peaceful, and we keep the atmosphere light and relaxed. We’ll chat through your hopes for the session, then work quietly and carefully to capture your baby just as they are – with all the little details you’ll want to remember.

We’ll focus on close-up images of their eyes, eyelashes, tiny fingers and toes – along with wider shots that show their expressions, movements, and, if you wish, cuddles with you.

Siblings and parents are always welcome to join in. Family portraits at this stage often become some of the most treasured – a simple reminder of how small they once were, cradled in your arms.

What to wear and bring

Simple, soft clothing in neutral tones always works best. Avoid bold prints or logos, which can distract from your baby’s face. You don’t need to bring anything complicated – just a few favourite outfits, a muslin cloth or two, and anything your baby finds comforting.

If you have a special blanket or item with meaning, we’d love to include it. It’s often those personal touches that make your photos truly unique.

Timeless portraits you’ll treasure

Your baby will change so quickly – it’s one of the bittersweet truths of parenthood. One minute they’re curled up in your arms, the next they’re rolling over, giggling, grabbing everything in sight. These early portraits become a tangible memory of a time that can feel like a blur.

At our Monmouthshire portrait photography studio, we don’t just take pictures – we help you capture a feeling. Our goal is always to create natural, beautiful images that reflect the deep bond you share with your baby and the quiet strength of these early weeks.
